Down with gas charges
The news papers are full of reasons why we should trim energy use. Gas expenses seem to be constantly on the rise and it is therefore also helpful to make greater use of the gas you buy. Whilst you use electricity and energy throughout your home you may find that up to one 50% of your energy bill relates to your gas heating system energy use. To help you we have listed below some prompt advice to cut your heating charges.
Don’t use the gas boiler in places where it is not required :
Central heating system radiators are made to be turned on and off. Have a look at whether there are any rooms in your home which are not being used and turn off the metal radiator there. Reducing the number of rooms which are actively heated will contract your gas use. Also close the entrance door to these rooms when not in use.
Prefer the gas heating system in preference to using a fire :
Central heating is much more efficient than using a fire to heat one room. With coal or wood fires most of the heat disappears up the chimney, the gas boiler is much more cost-efficient for heating than an electric fire.
Draft proof where you have draughts
As chilled draughts blow into your home money flows out in the opposite direction. Use draft excluders or entrance door brushes where they can be fitted. Block gaps in door and windows with a foam based sealant. If you live in an older home you might be stunned how often these gaps occur. If you are careful and use a wax candle flame you can detect where draughts are in a room.
A sweater or blanket might mean you don’t need to switch up the heating :
If you are going to switch up the heating thermostat stop and think whether it could be best to put on some additional clothing. A tenpercent decrease in your gas use can easily be reached by reducing your room temperature by 1°.
Make greater use on your drapes to control temperature :
When the sun shines in the wintertime make sure that it can heat your house like keeping the drapes open. With falling night-time external temperatures your windows can lose a lot of heat. Drapes can be an extra form of insulation and this time and trim heat loss if they are shut, saving a small amount each daylight amounts to a large saving on your heating costs over time. Thick drapes are best at stopping heat loss than thin ones.
:
Check your gas heating and whether it has a hot water tank as this should be insulated. The hot water cylinder will hold hot water you have paid for and it is craziness to allow this to cool down unused throughout the day time.
Don’t heat the walls of your home immediately at the rear of the radiators, metal foil can be used to reflect the heat pruning this energy loss.
