Pumped/vented systems are the most common. A pumped/vented Central Heating System includes components known as a feed and expansion tank to allow for the expansion of water as it is heated in the radiators. The hot water storage tank provides your home with warm water and brings heat to the heating radiators. The tank makes way for any water expansion that is caused by the heating process. The tank is positioned at the point of maximum height, usually in the attic area to create water pressure. It serves a dual purpose by heating the house and also supplying heated water.
A lot of older homes have pumped/vented Gas Central Heating systems.
A slightly newer heating boiler is sealed heating system and this is the preferred heating system in newer properties. A sealed system, as the name suggests is a closed system so no water tanks are needed. This unvented system eliminates water tanks and loft plumbing, thus giving a number of advantages.
- No risk of freezing pipes in the loft.
- As opposed to pumped/vented systems there is no need for maintenance work on tanks or pipes.
- The risk of a leaking water tank is all together missing.
- Unlike pumped/vented systems, air is not drawn through open vents so the possibility of air locks, corroding and sludge is much lower.
- Can be flushed out under pressure if needed by the mains water supply.
All the required controls and safety devices are incorporated into the sealed Central Heating systems. The mains water supplies the water required for the sealed Gas Central Heating system. It is plumbed straight into the main water supply.
The system also has a pressure vessel which contains compressed gas, it controls the variations in pressure and a diaphragm is used to separate it from the sealed system. Pressure buildup in a Sealed system can be relieved by a safety valve which drains out water; and pressure drop is compensated by automatic fresh intake of water via another valve.
