The most usual type of system is the pumped or vented system. The main difference you will see is that this form of heating system in addition to the hot water cylinder is that it has an expansion tank. The expansion tank permits the system to be topped up with water and creates headroom for the hot water to expand when the heating system is used. The attic is most usually used to house the expansion tank as it needs to be high in the house.

A more modern option is a sealed system. Sealed systems have fewer elements having no need for the water expansion tank.
